ATTENTION EMPLOYERS

If employing people were easy,

If I could show you some proven strategies to help improve your business, would you want to hear about it?

What if I could "walk you through" the process of becoming a better employer and guarantee that you will save money, increase employee productivity and reduce employer liability? Would you want to hear about it then?

You didn't become an expert in your business without education and experience. Why should the "business of employing people" be any different?

If employing people were easy, everyone would be doing it!

The fact is, it takes solid skills and knowledge to manage, motivate and train employees. To be an effective employer, you have to understand payroll rules and regulations, employer and employee taxes, employee benefits, workers' compensation insurance, risk management practices, state unemployment insurance, various employment laws, and human resource systems and practices. In short, employing people is a complex business on its own.

"The EMMT Monthly" Do it right and your business will profit, Do it wrong and your business is at risk!

My name is Walt Capell, and I consult with business owners and managers on a weekly basis. Most of the business owners I meet pride themselves on how much they know about their business. And most owners usually know their stuff. But I'm often surprised by how little interest they take in their other business- that is, the business of employing people.

You see, starting a business is just the beginning. It doesn't always require employees to get started. Many owners start out using independent contractors. But the moment you hire your first employee you have just started a second business. A business that comes with high stakes.

I like to ask owners for details about this other business. I ask for information such as their workers' compensation experience modifier and their state unemployment tax rate (SUTA or SUI). I often get a puzzled look. Many owners have to ask one of their employees to give them this information.

So my question is this: Even if you have managers and supervisors handling these important employer-related matters, how do you hold them accountable for positive results if you don't know or understand this information yourself?

Most employers are missing the boat when it comes to one of the most important and profitable secrets to long-term business success:

Great employer practices save you money...and make you money!

When you're great at the business of employing people, you can focus on your real business. You can spend time on strategic planning and growth instead of worrying about employee turnover, liability, and trust.

I consistently find that only a handful of employers have any kind of formal and consistent performance review program. And even less have an employee documentation process. Many employers fly by the seat of their pants and only react to employee-related issues when they reach a crisis, or when they have no other choice but to deal with a problem. And when thy do react, they often take bad advice from unqualified individuals and use it to make important decisions about their business and their employees.

This shouldn't surprise you, but the most successful employers I meet already do many of the things I teach employers how to do.

Here's another secret to being a great employer:

Employees really want to know how they "fit" with your company

Most owner's and managers like to think their employees are satisfied and, therefore, they don't need to review performance or document employee conflicts and achievements. This is a major fallacy! The only employees who don't appreciate (or want) feedback are the kind of employees you shouldn't want working for your business.

The truth is that good employees want to know how they're doing- good and bad. Think about it....we often spend more time at our jobs than we do with our families because we depend on it to earn a living. Doesn't it make since that employees want to feel appreciated and want to know what it takes to earn more money and more recognition from their jobs?

Do your employees know how they "fit" with your business? The value of being a smart employer?

  • Smart employers know how to manage their workers' compensation insurance and reduce their experience modifiers to get the best rates year after year.

  • Smart employers know how to protest and win state unemployment claims. And they know how to reduce their unemployment tax liability to the lowest possible rate.

  • Smart employers know exactly what benefits matter to their employees and how much these benefits add to their bottom line. They don't rely on an agent's "commission-driven" advice because they already know which benefits they want and need.

  • Smart employers understand the true cost of employing people. They understand the difference between employee and employer taxes and they build those internal costs into their pricing strategies.

  • Smart employees definitely know how to manage, motivate and train employees using good human resource systems and practices. They conduct employee reviews on a consistent basis. And they have written procedures to solve employee-related problems.

Example 1: state unemployment tax

Imagine two companies with 10 employees each. Lets assume the unemployment wage base (the amount of wages the state tax is based on for each employee) for the state they do business in is $10,000.00. And let's assume zero employee turnover for this illustration.

Company A is a smart employer. They have achieved a 0.50% state unemployment tax rate (SUTA). The company has reduced turnover over the past several years. They protest all frivolous unemployment claims and they usually win these claims because of their good documentation process.

Company B is not so smart. They have a 4.25% SUTA rate. They don't worry about turnover. And they haven't bothered to learn how to protest and win unemployment claims. They never document anything.

Company A pays about $500.00 a year in SUTA tax for all their employees.

Company B pays about $4,250.00 in SUTA tax for their employees.

Before any profits are earned for the year, Company A is $3,750.00 more profitable than Company B. Our example doesn't even consider the fact that that Company B will begin paying the tax again each time a new employee is hired during the year. Turnover will cost Company B even more money!

Is your business giving money away? Example 2: workers' compensation insurance

Let's look at the same two companies with 10 employees each. They're in the same industry and, therefore, have the same work comp class codes and rates per $100 of payroll. Let's assume the standard work comp rate is $7.00 per $100 in gross wages. And the annual gross wages for each company totals $250.000.00.

Company A is our smart employer. They have a 0.80 experience modifier. The company has a risk management plan in place and rewards safe practices. When they have a comp claim, they manage it closely with their insurance carrier to minimize claim expenses. They review their loss data on a regular basis. And they get injured employees back to work a.s.a.p. with their "light-duty" program.

Company B is not so smart. They have a 1.35 experience modifier. The company is disorganized and cluttered. Accidents happen frequently because employees aren't properly trained to use the equipment. And when they have a work comp claim, they don't get involved. They let the employee and insurance carrier work it out. And they let the employee decide when to come back to work.

Company A pays about $14,000.00 annually for work comp on their employees.

Company B pays about $23,625.00 annually for work comp on their employees.

What's the difference between Company A and Company B for the same legally required insurance coverage?

$13,375.00 difference in work comp and SUTA

Employees: What Every Employer Needs To Know!

Audiobook on CD. Approximately 75 Minutes long

Published. November 2003, Written and read by Walt Capell, MBA

Professionally recorded and manufactured in the USA

"Being an employee and an employer, I have learned the so-called rules of tax laws, rights, self-employment, and many other items the hard way. So when I received Walt Capell's Employees: What Every Employer Needs to Know, I was unsure if his cd could explain all the materials I had amassed over the years. I was surprised on many levels. The cd explained many points in plain English, which it takes many government publications to explain in 300 or more pages in legalese text. Wow, a cd about the law you don't need a lawyer for . . . Walt should get a prize for that alone. Capell's slow and simple delivery is easygoing on the ears, which is a point in his favor. He crammed this audio seminar with information. It makes the information simple enough for the novice business owner to understand. Yet, there is enough information in this cd that the old hands in HR will have a few chestnuts they can use too. I can't wait for the next one."
