In 1887, Grover Cleveland was President of the United States, the automobile was not invented, and Tony Lama was born to Italian immigrant parents. There are no records of his early life, but it is known that Lama was orphaned at age 11. A uncle apprenticed the young boy to a shoemaker in Syracuse, New York where he learned the leather and boot trade.
