What causes cold sores?
The herpes simplex virus causes the skin irritation known as a "cold sore". Chances are you've heard of "herpes" before, but a lot of people don't realize there are two types of herpes simplex virus, "type 1" and "type 2".
Type 1 herpes simplex virus.
Herpes simplex virus type one (HSV1) usually infects body tissues that lie "above the waistline". In most cases, it is type one that causes cold sores.
Type 2 herpes simplex virus.
Herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV2) is commonly known as "genital herpes" and is a sexually transmitted disease. HSV2 isn't usually the virus which causes cold sores, but it can do so.
How do people get exposed to the herpes simplex virus that causes their cold sores?
