I figured I should make a quick update here on this day that normally doesn't exist to let you all know what is happening. Well, put simply, I've been making some progress on the next big feature in NP Subscriber PRO. The next release will feature an optional SQL backend. With the little bit of testing I've done so far, the results on extremely large lists have been nothing short of amazing. While this feature is nowhere near completion, it is progressing somewhat steadily.

There will be a script available to convert your existing lists to SQL tables. This script is almost completed. Some of the more complicated features have already been ported to SQL as well. However, as always, there really isn't a timetable for the next release. I'm also debating whether or not I want to release the current v1.4RC2 as the final v1.4, v1.4, and then just make the SQL port v1.5 RC1.

Not interested in using SQL (or can't on your host)? Don't worry, the text file method will still be the default, and even if you don't have the required database modules on your host, you can still run the script. Also, I'm currently testing on MySQL databases, but it will receive a test on PostgreSQL before release. These two databases represent the majority of what's available on the platforms that are likely to be running Perl scripts... But, for compatibility's sake, I am staying away from using any features that are not standard. So, for example, even if you want to run Subscriber on a Microsoft IIS server with SQL Server, it should still work.

Finally, an update! Not just a normal update either. This update is to announce that there are now three new version of NP Subscriber available. NP Subscriber now includes some features that were previously in PRO. These include SPAM Guard, the variable symbol safety net, unsubscribe link, and more. The registered version includes message templates. What are those? They allow you to create a variable of text that will be present in the message box each time you go to send a message. This helps if you have the same text in all of your messages. This is also a new feature present in...

NP Subscriber PRO v1.4 RC2 is also now available. This update includes the most requested feature ever: bounced email filtering. This feature requires some manual editing and the ability to forward emails to a script.

It also includes the ability to notify the list administrator after a certain number of new subscribers, domain un-banning, message templates, and the usual little fixes and things I forgot to put in the changelog...

For a more detailed description of the changes, check out the Subscriber PRO manual.

Go Packers!

I hope the delay between the last releases and these isn't too annoying. I'm hoping to shorten the update cycle for upcoming features, but we'll have to wait and see what happens.
