We could be. Quite simply, we could double our price and the pages would still be less than .04¢ each for every page on the site or half that if you count the mini-pages and all the new stuff added throughout the year.
I've been scraping for almost 7 years now. I took up computer scraping about 4 years ago when medical conditions made my journaling near illegible by hand.
I quickly tired of never being able to find free art or pages that fit my themes and noticed that most of what I had found was all the same stuff. So, I started buying it on disk, then on some of the new member sites. What an eye opener!
Long story short... I found lots of art, but the page sites and department store varieties were lacking in not only color, but in quantity and styles. Those of you that live in more rural areas know what I mean. If you wanted real quality digital pages, you were forced to pay what I felt was out of my league prices and it was amazing how little their stock changed from year to year. Let alone month to month!
So I started creating my own pages using the tools I had on the computer. It wasn't long and friends and family were using the pages I created for their books. I loved what I was doing. So, one request led to another and my site was born.
But I had two mandates that I had to keep because of my past experiences:
1. First and foremost, this site has to be affordable. Not all forms of scrapbooking should be expensive. Just like not everything expensive is necessarily of high quality, not everything of quality need necessarily be expensive. I have to provide value to my members. And, since value is in the eye of the beholder, that means everything on the site has to be original and over deliver till it hurts.
2. Our clients (not customers - there's a difference) must be taken care of at all times. That means that it has to have lots of selection, lots of variety and most of all: An ever changing supply of new materials and ideas to use them. After all, what good is any of it if it doesn't get used? It also means that we keep in touch and can be reached if needed. That phone number on the site... that's my home phone. If you need help at 3 am, call and wake me up. I'll take lost sleep over unhappy clients any day.
So, now you know how it all got started.
Now, why don't I raise the price? Because I don't have to yet ;-)

"Save your money for all the book covers you're going to need..."
How would you like to scrap on a shoestring budget?
With the cost of photo printers falling like leaves in the fall and the new levels of quality and speed - I can't believe how inexpensive my pages are becoming.
I can already print many of my pages on card stock 50% cheaper than I could have bought the page on bond paper. Which do you think will stand up to wear and tear longer?
I'm talking 13 to 15¢ each including the stock.
What's more, look at what happens when I do the whole page on the printer... Economical creative fun! Don't believe me? Here's a real example.
Hand Scrapping: Two 4X6 Photos - .20¢ each (and that's cheap processing), Pre-printed 8.5X11 page - .33¢ (on sale), Stickers - .50¢ (if you're frugal) and of course small cutouts or lettering - .50¢ (again if you're getting them on sale). That's $1.73 for an inexpensive simple hand scrapped page. Even if you do your own lettering and titles, you would still be spending more than $1.23 (I'm a filler, most of mine are $3.00 or more if I do them the old fashioned way)
Computer pages: GIF format - .25¢ and that's if you only count using 100 of our pages (1/12th the site), at the current subscription rate, each page is less than .02¢ each for all 1200 pages. That of course doesn't count the 12 months of additions still to come. Digital picture, art, frames, lettering and anything else I add on the computer - Zero! Printing is the biggest variable; we use refillable cartridges on our printer and buy our ink for about $1.50 per refill per color. Since we get at least 50 pages between refills (I just printed 90 full color photo pages between fills in Feb and even then it was just the cyan for all the water that was empty - cruise photo's), that equates to about .18¢ per page (6 colors). So, our total per page cost is .43¢. Less if we use less ink and more pages from the site, more if we use more ink. But I know that even with photo paper, you can do it for less than the $1.73 it costs to do the hand scrapped page (even my filler pages!).
These are all very conservative numbers. When was the last time you hand scrapped a page for less than $1.00? Since we use a printer with individual color tanks, we don't have to replace (spoken waste) unused colors. This greatly reduces our cost per printed page. Even if we bought ink at the local retail store and spent $9 per color, we could still print pages at less than $1 per page. A third of that cost could be accomplished for a page with a moderate amount of white space. Like I said, Economical creative fun!
Just a little research on the net revealed the following: Cost per page is hard to nail down, but estimates for older printers ranged from a low of 80¢ to a high of $1.93 for an 8X10 photo. The new photo printers are a vast improvement with high estimates of .50 to 90¢ for that same 8X10 photo page. Now that's cheap! I think I see a new printer in my future.
Quick tip from me to you - Make sure your next printer has individual ink tanks for each color. It may cost you more up front, but the savings in ink costs will save you more than double that over time.
