About Cisco's Exam
Cisco Systems, Inc. announced three enhancements to the CCNA Program, including a new two-step exam approach, revisions to the existing CCNA exam, and the option for candidates to apply one of the new exams for CCNA recertification. The CCNA 640-801 exam is designed to better assess the networking skills of entry-level candidates and will reflect the combined knowledge learned in two Cisco Systems courses, the new Introduction to Cisco Network Technology (INTRO) course and the newest version of the Interconnecting Cisco Network Devices (ICND) course.
CCNA certification candidates may either take the CCNA 640-801 exam (available on June 30, 2003) or the INTRO 640-821 (currently offered as beta exam 641-821) and ICND 640-811 (available on June 30, 2003) exams. The new ICND exam also qualifies for recertification, providing a new option for CCNA certified individuals.
The easier way is the two-step path to CCNA but you have to spend more money and attempt two exams. One exam path is recommended for those who have previous experience in the field of networking. Specifically if you know subnetting ,OSI model, and WAN protocols, you can select the single-exam path.
The CCNA curriculum includes understanding the functions and operations of local area networks (LAN), Cisco IOS fundamentals, wide area networks (WAN), virtual private networks (VPN), and Storage Area Networks (SAN). Other topics covered in the CCNA curriculum are IP Addressing, Cisco Command Line Interface (CLI), Routing and Switching technologies and protocols. CCNA certification content, technology, and testing remains focused on real-world skills assessment with labs and exam simulations being key components of CCNA courses and exams.
Exam Description
The CCNA exam is the qualifying exam available to candidates pursuing a single-exam option for the Cisco Certified Network Associate CCNA certification. The CCNA (640-801) exam will test materials from the new Interconnection Cisco Network Devices (ICND) course as well as the new Introduction to Cisco Networking Technologies (INTRO) course. The exam will certify that the successful candidate has important knowledge and skills necessary to select, connect, configure, and troubleshoot the various Cisco networking devices. The exam covers topics on Extending Switched Networks with VLANS, Determining IP Routes, Managing IP traffic with Access Lists, Establishing Point-to-Point connections, and Establishing Frame Relay Connections.

Interconnecting Cisco Networking Devices (ICND 2.0) or (ICND 2.1)
With 640-801, the objective categories have been simplified into four areas: Planning & Designing, Implementation & Operation, Troubleshooting and Technology.
55 to 65 questions (three simulation), 90 minute time limit, apx. score of 849 needed to pass. Cost: $125 (U.S.).
There are three router simulator questions, many multiple choice questions and a few drag-and-drop questions. Of course that could change.
The exam engine itself is slow when it comes to switching between the simulator-based questions and the standard multiple-choice questions -- patience is a must! For most simulator-based questions, you are presented with a network scenario, required to configure or troubleshoot one or more routers, save and verify your work. The simulator behaves very much like the real thing and includes limited support for abbreviated, editing and help commands.
Realize it is not a simple test and that is why hands on experience is suggested and properly preparation is absolutely necessary.
From a statistical perspective, those of you who use routers and switches every day have a better chance of passing because more of you will easily remember the commands needed for the simulation questions. But do not despair—CCNA certification can be achieved through study, plus some hands-on experience. In the end, if Cisco succeeds in maintaining the difficulty of the CCNA exam, your CCNA certification will remain valuable.
Cisco's philosophy is that, by passing the exam, you fully understand the concepts. More important, Cisco wants to be sure that passing the exam proves that you have the skills to actually implement the features, not just talk about them that's why simulations are included.
So much of networking relates to how the concepts, protocols, and configurations interact, so it is easy for Cisco to create questions that test your understanding more than just asking for a simple fact. Every vendor, including Cisco, hopes to create certification tests that do not become too easy and, therefore, meaningless.

Design a simple LAN using Cisco technology.

Select an appropriate routing protocol based on user requirements.

Key to this is plan, assign, configure, subnet and troubleshoot IP addresses. You must have a thorough understanding of the classes of IP addresses, their starting and ending ranges, default subnet masks, the minus 2 rule, how to figure and identify the first host, last host and broadcast address of any subnet, along with calculating the mask for a required number of networks or hosts or both. VERY IMPORTANT, You really need to have subnetting down cold before walking into the exam booth or you could find yourself short on time to finish all the questions! If you don't feel comfortable with subnetting, start practicing now. We have included a lot of material on subnetting in our tests & study guide.
