586 BCE The First Temple was destroyed following the Babylonians’ conquest of the Judean Kingdom. With the dispersion of the Jews from Palestine those living outside of Israel where not obligated to pay tithes.
The New Testament contains no explicit command to tithe.
Jesus Christ did not support His ministry with Tithes.
Jesus Christ did not collect tithes.
The Apostles did not teach nor collect tithes.
"The early church had no tithing system it was not that no need of supporting the Church existed or was recognized, but rather that other means would suffice" (The Catholic Encyclopedia).
"It is admitted universally that the payment of tithes or the tenth of possessions for sacred purposes did not find a place within the Christian church during the age covered by the apostles and their immediate successors" (Hastings Dictionary of the Apostolic Church).
70 A.D. The Romans’ destroyed the Second Temple. No Temple, No tithes.
313 A.D. Constantine recognizes Christianity as the official religion of the Roman Empire. Tithing was instituted to raise money to Build Church Buildings.
As the Roman Catholic Church grew it became necessary to make laws to insure financial support. The obligatory payment of tithes was adopted from the Mosaic Law.
585 A.D. Roman Catholic Church makes tithing a law under threat of excommunication. Excommunication sent terror into the hearts of the faithful. They believed if excommunicated they would lose their salvation and be damned to hell.
"In the early Christian church the custom of consecrating to religious purpose a tenth of income was voluntary, and it was not made obligatory until the Council of Tours in 567 A.D.. The second Council of Macon, in 585 A.D., enjoined the payment of tithes under pain of ex-communication"
(M'Clintock and Strong's Cycloped).
At the present time, in most countries where some species of tithes still exist, as in England (for the Established Church), in Austria, and Germany, the payment has been changed into a rent charge.
In English speaking countries generally, as far as Catholics are concerned, the clergy receive no tithes.
German law allows for an 8 to 9% Church tax. The Church tax is collected by the State on behalf of the Catholic and Protestant Churches through payroll deductions.
In some parts of Canada, the tithe is still recognized by civil law, and the Fourth Council of Quebec (1868) declared that its payment is binding in conscience of the faithful.
Some churches (such as the Assembly of God, some Baptists, etc.) pride themselves in the ruling that unless a person tithes, they are not considered as members.
In the Roman Catholic Church, tithing is no longer mandated, it simply doesn’t work.
In the Mormon Church, tithing is mandatory. In the Seventh-Day Adventist, it is highly recommended.
In the Lutheran Church, the tithe is thrown out as a target ‘conscience binding’ by some and ‘fulfilled’ by others.
