How did I lose so much weight so quickly ?
Firstly, I followed the diet almost exactly as Dr Agatston described. There's a reason for most of his instructions. For example, why does he specify decaffeinated coffee ? Because caffeine causes a boost in your insulin level and can cause cravings. In Phase 1 you're trying to stabilize your insulin, and remove cravings.
Do I need to buy expensive ingredients and supplements ?
No, you're eating healthy natural foods. Fresh fish, chicken, green veg, steak etc. If preferred you can take a single multivitamin tablet every morning if you want to be sure of getting all your daily requirement.
How can I save time in food preparation ? Most diets need hours of searching for ingredients in the stores, and then hours of preparation.
The South Beach Diet uses mostly healthy fresh natural ingredients. Most of these cook very quickly. For some lunches I use my George Foreman Lean Fat Machine to cook a chicken piece in 3 minutes. When you leave Phase 1, you can relax and re-introduce carbohydrates. Right ?
Yes, you need to start eating some carbs again, but be very careful at this stage. Your body has stabilized and carb cravings have reduced or gone. But you're very sensitive at this stage, and your body will grab at any carbs it can see. Those carbs will turn into pounds of fat around your waist. I know because I made this mistake, and gained 2 lbs in my first week in Phase 2.
Do I need to exercise every day ?
No, the South Beach Diet doesn't depend on exercise for its success. Any diet can succeed if it demands people burn off 1500 calories a day thro exercise. Only problem is they don't succeed because people can't follow it for long. Sure a little exercise can only be good for you, as it boosts metabolism and makes you feel good. I cycled for about 30 minutes, 2 or 3 times a week while I was in Phase 1 and 2.
Can I drink alcohol ?
That's an important question for many people, particularly if you're going to parties or business functions. The book isn't clear on this. Most diets ban alcohol, because people automatically lose weight if they stop drinking .. so the diet looks good. However, I can tell you that some alcohol is allowed on the South Beach Diet, after you've finished Phase 1.
So for the first 2-3 weeks you shouldn't drink any alcohol. It's part of the body stabilizing process, just like avoiding caffeine. After Phase 1 you can enjoy a couple of glasses of wine a day if you want. Beer is mostly best avoided, as it's right at the top of the Glycemic Index (more on that later)
How about dining out ? Can I eat fast food ?
There's some sad news for any fast food addicts reading this. But you already know the answer. Fast food doesn't really play a part in any diet. In fact, it's the cause of much obesity. Maybe you can find a place that will serve you a piece of grilled chicken, accompanied by a tossed salad. Try asking for that in your local fast food outlet ! But there'll probably be more and more places start to serve healthier food. There's a big, and growing market.
In a normal restaurant or diner it's much easier. Avoid the bread when sitting down. Order grilled chicken, fish or steak, and ask for a salad to go along with it. If you're out of Phase 1, enjoy a couple of glasses of wine with your meal.
