The most dangerous enemy is not a thief in the night...
...but the one whom you do not recognize.
(Recognizing Diabetes...)
Recognizing the enemy...
The most dangerous enemy is not a thief in the night. The most dangerous enemy is the one that you don't recognize. Worse still, is when signs begin to warn of a betrayer in the midst, but in self-denial, one refuses to accept the evidence presented...
We've all read stories in which the rulers, army generals, organized crime gang-members, even family members having a feud, did not recognize the enemy or the tell-tale signs of an impending disaster. Probably one of the most told is that of the assassination of Julius Ceasar, then the ruler of the Roman Empire. As he was dying from his stab wounds, he looked up at his attackers and, recognizing one of his most trusted servants, said, "Even you Brutus, my son? Then let me sleep." And he lay down his head and died.
Because the enemy often recognizes that one is most dangerous when not recognized, great efforts are taken to disguise one-self. The best spies in the world are the spies who will never get caught. They blend in so naturally that their victims, even after being victimized, may never discover the weak link that led to their victimization.
When it comes to taking care of our health, there is probably no greater danger than not recognizing the subtle symptoms of a disease because they are so well blended as being related to our lifestyles. Often a headache, a feeling of exhaustion, a bout of vomiting, a temporary loss of sensation, or frequent hunger, can easily be explained away.
What if there was a disease that would mask its symptoms behind our common everyday lifestyle activities? Tiredness, Exhaustion, Fatigue, Hunger, Thirst, Drowsiness, Sweet food/Sugar Craving, Short-sightedness and temporary blurred vision...
- A naturally hardworking person, for example, who has started feeling constant fatigue, exhaustion and drowsiness would quickly explain it away as a result having worked too hard.
- A pregnant woman quickly explains away her sudden sugar-craving and binge-eating as being directly related to her pregnancy.
- Parents of teenagers will often attribute the long hours the teenager sleeps, aleeps, and a general lack of desire to work or do anythi ng much than sleep, as part of the teenager's growing-up habits.
- Parents with young children will often attribute their children's desire to always eat something sweet, or drink something sweet, as part of children growing up.
- Often an adult will not even recognize that one is drinking, say, a large volume of orange juice at each meal. Orange juice is quite healthy, is it not? Definitely, infinitely much better than the pop out there. It's organic and natural.
- And when one starts having difficulty seeing objects at a distance, a person assumes that one is getting short-sighted with age, and a pair of glasses will solve the problem.
- Often, one does not even consider that frequent hunger bouts and persistent thirst could be symptoms of a disease.
Sadly, there is, indeed, a disease that masks itself behind all these common features of lifestyle-activity. It is so good in its disguise and blending with lifestyle, that most major hospitals make a special point to advise its victims that the biggest threat to falling prey to the complications of the disease, apart from not taking medication, is self-denial. Self-denial leads one to avoid taking preventative measures against the complications.
The culprit is called Diabetes. And the possible complications associated with diabetes if left untreated over a long period of time include, but are not limited to:
- Amputation of ones limbs e.g. amputating the feet/legs, etc. World wide, OVER 50% of all non-traumatic amputations are due to diabetes.
- Kidney disease that may require dialysis or a transplant. Some reports indicate that up to 40%, if not more, of kidney disease patients are diabetic.
- Blindness. Diabetes is THE LEADING CAUSE of adult blindness in North America.
- Strokes are six times more likely in diabetics than non-diabetics.
- Heart Disease is four times as likely in a diabetic than a non-diabetic
- Impotence. Diabetes is a major cause of impotence.
The complications of diabetes are indeed very frightening. It is advisable to always visit your doctor every few months to request a test for diabetes.
