Why do I get acid reflux?
Acid reflux and heartburn can have different causes. Some of these would include: An over acidic stomach, eating a large meal, H. pylori bacterium, digestive problems, or a damaged lower esophageal sphincter.
People usually suffer from acid reflux because they have a damaged lower esophageal sphincter and esophagus. Sometimes this damage from acid reflux is negligible and other times it is very bad. However it can be corrected - and quite easily too!
People experience acid reflux, heartburn etc. because the stomach acid fumes come in contact with the lesions on their esophagus. This contact will create pain - a feeling like your chest is being scalded from the inside. Have you ever got acidic vinegar on a wound? It hurts!
Orange or tomato juice can cause pain for people the esophagus damage, as the acid in the drinks comes in contact with the sores causes pain. Evidently, if drinking acidic juice doesn't cause someone pain they probably never get acid reflux or heartburn because their digestive system is working properly.

What is Acid Reflux?
The medical name for Acid Reflux is Gastroesophageal reflux disease, or more commonly, GERD. Acid reflux (GERD) is the regurgitation (back up, or refluxed) of stomach acid into the esophagus. Acid reflux is often confused with intermittent heartburn because heartburn is the most frequent symptom of GERD. While regular heartburn is only very occasional, GERD heartburn usually happens at least twice a week for at least three months, and can badly injure your esophagus.
Acid reflux disease is when the acid rises into the esophagus repeatedly enough to damage the esophagus and/or have consequences on you day-to-day living. A muscle called the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) is located at the top of your stomach, which lets food in by opening and shutting. Also, it shields the esophagus by blocking stomach acid from it. The LES will open at inappropriate times if someone suffers from GERD, allowing acid from the stomach to get into the esophagus, where it doesn't belong.
Acid reflux disease can result in major health problems that call for hospitalization and perhaps surgery. Some people who suffer from acid reflux disease can get stomach acid in their lungs and start wheezing or coughing. Sore throats are sometimes an indication of GERD, as the acid has burnt it. Tooth enamel can be corroded by stomach acid if it reaches the mouth.. More on Acid Reflux
