Vocabulary Booster CD
Gene McKenna ’79
Reviewed by Lois Lake Church
Choate Rosemary Hall Bulletin, Summer 2003
“It’s better than vocab cards,” says Chris M. “I guess I’m more of an auditory learner. This CD was helpful.” His feeling is echoed by numerous other students who listened to “Vocabulary Booster” by Gene McKenna. If they need to increase their knowledge of and facility with words—and what young people don’t?—a great many students would rather listen than look.
Gene McKenna is director of Ace In-Home Tutoring (www.inhometutoring.com), which he founded in 1990. The service provides one-on-one tutoring in all subjects in the Fairfield County area. In creating the vocabulary program, the experienced McKenna draws on his knowledge of students and their learning styles. He graduated from Georgetown with an English major, is a state-certified teacher with a MA in Education, and “for good measure,” he says, he “scored a perfect 800 on the Verbal section of the SAT.”
“I guarantee that you’ll make great strides in building your vocabulary,” McKenna says of his CD. He asserts that having a strong vocabulary can benefit a person not only on standardized tests, but also in the classroom, on the job, and in social contexts: “Having a way with words ... can give you a subtle edge.” Sumalee K., another student who listened to the CD, describes the program as “very helpful and direct.” She says that hearing the words explained and being able to listen to them several times “helped the words I learned in English class make sense to me” (sic). Her classmate Sonny H. adds, “It improved the way I understand words and helped me memorize words I thought I knew.”
“Vocabulary Booster” focuses on the 200 words that McKenna considers the most frequently tested ones on the SAT: those most likely to appear on future tests. Although students often object to learning words by drilling, a rich vocabulary is one of the two predictors of a high verbal score on standardized tests, the other being wide and frequent reading. Since upgrading vocabulary knowledge is quicker and easier than upgrading reading skills, the Vocabulary Booster CD may well be the answer.
McKenna, in a low-key, soothing voice, enunciates each of the 200 words, its part of speech, and its definition. He then gives a sentence using the word, and often a breakdown of the word by root, prefix, or suffix. He makes the words more accessible to listeners by combining mnemonics with well-known names: Arnold Schwarzenegger (who has “amassed a mass of muscles”), Eminem (who is eminent), and Michael Jordan (“the epitome of skill and grace on the basketball court”), and “Mrs. Gore thinks that her husband Al is truly altruistic and deserves to be the president.” McKenna makes unfamiliar words accessible, additionally, by using situations recognizable to students:
“Erratic: It’s an adjective meaning unpredictable. “Because Rick got either As or Fs on his tests, his teacher rated his performance as quite erratic.”
Even if students consider some of the examples silly, they can’t help remembering words so cleverly explained and illustrated. Students may have more opportunity to learn words using a CD—in the car, on the computer, through a headset—than they will by studying a list of words. “Vocabulary Booster” by Gene McKenna is a good investment for classrooms and students alike.
