Snoring Facts
- Snoring develops in situations where the air passage is blocked, thereby inhibiting normal breathing while sleeping.
- Muscles in the throat, which are open while the body is awake, relax and sag during sleep. Snoring occurs when these muscles collapse (i.e. become too lax), creating a blockage at the airway.
- Snoring can be the result of a nasal blockage, when the mouth has to be used to inhale. In an open-mouth position the tongue is pushed back causing the uvula to press against the back of the throat.
- Snoring is noisier the more the airway is blocked.
- Snoring can be a hereditary condition.
- From middle age, overweight people can start to snore.
