I snored severely.

Snoring Facts

  • Snoring occurs when the air passage is hindered, thus inhibiting usual and easy breathing while asleep.


  • The decibel rating of snoring is directly related to the amount the muscles relax.


  • Throat muscles stay wide open when the body is awake, but at the onset of sleep they relax inwards. Snoring occurs when these muscles collapse (i.e. become too lax), creating a blockage at the airway.


  • Breathing through the mouth (as a result of a nasal blockage) can cause snoring. The back of the throat can be obstructed by the uvula when the mouth is open and the tongue is forced back.


  • Snoring can run in the family.

  • Muscles of the throat can become too lax or swell, thereby blocking the airway, because of alcohol, sleeping pills, smoking, enlarged tonsils, blocked nose, sinusitis, excess body weight, cough mixture containing dextromethorphan or an allergy to dust, mold, wheat or eggs.
