Snoring Facts
- Snoring occurs when the air passage is hindered, thus inhibiting usual and easy breathing while asleep.
- The muscles in the throat are kept open while a person is awake, but when they are asleep they relax and close up. Snoring occurs when these muscles collapse (i.e. become too lax), creating a blockage at the airway.
- Snoring becomes louder as the muscles relax more.
- Breathing through the mouth (as a result of a nasal blockage) can cause snoring. The tongue is pushed back when the mouth is open, and makes the uvula to press against the throat.
