InfoServ eXtranet Application (XAp)-Engine is the most flexible and easiest way to create dynamic web sites and intranet applications. It is based on a Java servlet which analyses normal HTML and special meta-tags and "tokens" to control the display and updating of data in any JDBC (or ODBC) compliant database. It is called automatically when the web server encounters a file ending with the extension ".xap", compiles the page and keeps it in memory so that subsequent calls can be immediately integrated with the data without having to interpret the commands every time. It is suitable for installation on an ISP server for secure and independent use by customers of the ISP. Access to the data can be controlled using password-based user logins.
The servlet can be installed on an ISP's web server to handle database applications for their own web customers. Each customer receives their own database, which they can upload or download using FTP if they wish. The ISP can pay for multiple licences so that each customer can support their own user base. An application is supplied, itself written using InfoServ XAp-Engine, for the administration of each customer's databases and user privileges. Each customer only has access to their own database, there is no way they can write an application to access the databases of other customers.
Because InfoServ XAp-Engine is written as a Java servlet, it will run on almost any server platform with any webserver software. Database access is achieved through the standard JDBC interface, which in turn can be layered under an ODBC interface, so the choice of database is also virtually unrestricted.
